Position Overview
We are seeking a reliable and reverent Sexton to support the daily operations and liturgical life of the parish. This role is essential in preparing the church for services and maintaining the sacred space with care and respect.
Important: This position involves responsibilities within the altar (sanctuary). Therefore, candidates must be practicing Orthodox Christians able to serve in accordance with the liturgical and canonical guidelines of the Church.
Key Responsibilities
- Open and close the church for all services
- Light and extinguish oil lamps
- Prepare Prosfora (liturgical bread) for services
- Clean and maintain all church and administrative spaces
- Set up and break down for baptisms, weddings, and funerals
- ($75 additional compensation per service)
- Prepare church grounds for services (e.g., parking cones for funerals)
- Replenish candles and Pangari supplies
- Assist with general parish needs as they arise
Expectations
- Maintain a respectful and reverent presence in a sacred environment
- Be dependable, punctual, and detail-oriented
- Availability for evenings, weekends, and major feast days
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
Qualifications
- Practicing member of the Orthodox Church
- Familiarity with Orthodox liturgical practices strongly preferred
- Basic custodial or facility experience helpful
- Physically able to perform light maintenance and cleaning tasks
