Sexton/Neokoros

The Position

The Sexton-Neokoros supports the clergy in the church's liturgical and sacramental life. This part-time role involves attending all scheduled divine liturgies and other church services, including weddings, baptisms, and funerals. 

Basic Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • An Orthodox Christian who enjoys attending church and shows reverence for the House of God.
  • Respects the clergy and is sincerely willing to follow their guidance.
  • They are current in their Pennsylvania Youth Clearances and Archdiocese Youth Worker Safety Training.
  • They carry out their church duties with dedication and discretion, working well with other adults and children serving at the Altar.
  • They enjoy assisting parishioners and visitors during church services as needed.
  • They maintain confidentiality, are reliable, and take pride in their work.
  • They reflect the values and mission of Annunciation in all interactions with clergy, staff, congregation members, and visitors.

Supervision

The Sexton-Neokoros performs under the direct supervision of the Pastor.

Confidentiality

The Sexton-Neokoros will respect the confidentiality of personal information regarding staff, volunteers, and other community groups that use the church facility, as well as parishioners. The Sexton-Neokoros shall not disclose nor discuss such personal details.

Work Schedule

  1. The schedule follows the ecclesiastical calendar, requiring attendance at all scheduled divine liturgies and church services such as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. The weekly commitment ranges from 5 to 20 hours, depending on the ecclesiastical calendar and the schedule of sacraments.
  2. The church office will provide you with the ecclesiastical calendar showing all scheduled divine liturgies, baptisms, and weddings two months in advance so that you can plan your workdays. For funerals, the church office will notify you as soon as the arrangements are made.
  3. Whenever you need time off for personal needs, family events, travel, etc., please inform us in advance to help arrange volunteer coverage for those days.

General Responsibilities

  1. Learn the purpose and role of each area and item in the Altar area. If you are uncertain, always consult with the priest.
  2. You are responsible for opening and closing the sanctuary for each church service and sacrament.
  3. You are responsible for keeping the Altar area organized and clean, as it is the House of God, and well-stocked with the necessary items for divine services and sacraments. Check the supply of prosfora loaves in the freezer, as well as wine and distilled water for Holy Communion, olive oil and wicks for the lamps, incense, charcoal, and candles for the narthex. Please inform the church office when supplies are running low.
  4. You are also responsible for maintaining the organization and supplies of candles in the narthex.
  5. Our custodian vacuums and mops the Altar floor during the week. You are responsible for wiping down and cleaning all countertops and cabinets after each church service.
