Missionary Director
What You Will Do
As Missionary Director, you will be one of the defining voices of OCMC — at home and across the world. Working alongside the Executive Director, you will lead the full life cycle of our missionary program: recruiting men and women with a heart for mission, forming and training them for the field, sending them out, and walking with them every step of the way.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Partnering with the Executive Director to advance OCMC’s strategic vision through missionaries serving in countries around the world.
- Building and sustaining relationships with mission leaders, church hierarchs, and partners across multiple continents.
- Managing a team and overseeing the recruitment, training, deployment, care, and support of OCMC’s career missionary force.

Position Overview
The Missionary Director is a senior organizational leader responsible for executing the strategic direction, development, implementation, and oversight of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center’s (OCMC) global Missionary Program. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Missionary Director provides vision, leadership, and accountability to ensure that missionaries are effectively recruited, trained, deployed, supported, evaluated, and stewarded in alignment with OCMC’s mission, Orthodox ecclesiology, and global partnerships. This role integrates long-term strategic planning with people leadership, operational oversight, financial stewardship, and external relationship management.
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Develops and implements, in collaboration with the Executive Director, the long-term vision, goals, and priorities of the Missionary Program.
- Aligns missionary strategy with OCMC’s organizational mission, theological commitments, and global Orthodox context.
- Provides thought leadership regarding contemporary missiology, cross-cultural ministry, and global mission trends.
- Advises the Executive Director and Board on missionary strategy, policy, and risk management.
Program Oversight & Accountability
- Oversees the full lifecycle of missionary service, including recruitment, discernment, vetting, training, deployment, furlough, re-entry, and evaluation.
- Establishes clear expectations for missionary roles, field plans, performance, and accountability.
- Ensures policies, procedures, and best practices are developed, updated, and consistently followed.
- Oversees and evaluates missionary fieldwork through direct contact, reporting, and field visits.
People & Team Leadership
- Leads a team that includes missionary department staff, OCMC missionaries and missionary specialists.
- Builds and sustains a culture of excellence, accountability, pastoral care, and collaboration.
- Conducts performance reviews, addresses personnel concerns, and supports professional and spiritual development.
Recruitment, Training, & Deployment
- Oversees and approves missionary recruitment strategies and candidate selection.
- Guides missionary placement decisions in partnership with hierarchs and host-country leadership.
- Ensures robust pre-service and ongoing training, including theology of mission, cross-cultural competency, fundraising, health, legal, and security preparation.
- Oversee the use of short-term mission teams as tools for recruitment and formation.
Financial Stewardship & Reporting
- Oversees the Missionary Program budget and financial performance.
- Works collaboratively with Finance and Development staff on budgeting, fundraising strategy, and donor stewardship.
- Ensures missionaries are informed of budgets, fundraising progress, and financial requirements.
- Prepare regular reports, analyses, and updates for the Executive Director and Board.
External Relations & Representation
- Serves as a primary liaison with hierarchs, clergy, host-country partners, and mission collaborators.
- Represents OCMC at conferences, parishes, seminaries, and Orthodox gatherings as appropriate.
- Partners with Communications staff to ensure accurate reporting and storytelling of missionary work.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensures compliance with OCMC policies, legal requirements, and international risk standards.
- Addresses escalated issues related to personnel, finance, or field safety.
What We are Looking for:
We are seeking a proven leader who can inspire and equip others, navigate the complexities of cross-cultural ministry, and cultivate meaningful relationships with clergy, donors, and mission partners.
Required:
- Active membership in a jurisdiction of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America.
- Ability to relate well with Orthodox hierarchs and ecclesial structures
- Strong leadership, relational, and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Ability and willingness to travel internationally.
- Based in or willing to relocate to St. Augustine, FL.
Preferred:
- At least 3 years of experience as an overseas missionary.
- A degree in missiology or a related theological field — or a genuine eagerness to pursue further study.
- An Orthodox Christian theological education.
- Track record of successful team leadership
- Technological fluency, particularly in Microsoft Office/Teams
- Experience or coursework in fundraising, donor relations, budgeting, or nonprofit financial management.
