Facilities Maintenance Lead

Background: 

Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church of Falls Church, Virginia serves a dynamic parish consisting of over 700 families. The campus consists of a church structure, a larger hall that includes a gymnasium, classrooms, and offices, and a smaller hall used for smaller events, meetings, and storage. It hosts a variety of events and activities seven days a week, including religious services, multiple schools operating daily, youth ministry programs, meetings, and seminars (among other activities). The gymnasium and conference facility are offered to the broader community under contracted rental agreements. 

Overview of position: 

The Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church Facilities Maintenance Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the operations, maintenance, and management of the property infrastructure encompassing the Greek Orthodox church and two community buildings.

This individual will report to our Church Administrator and will work in consultation with the Parish Council Facilities Committee (the “Facilities Committee”) to ensure our facilities are maintained in good care and available to support the activities and mission of a thriving community. This is a full-time role and weekend work will be required.

We are seeking a self-starter, team player who:

  • Takes initiative to complete projects and tasks.
  • Pays attention to detail.
  • Can diagnose a facilities issue and explain root causes and whether a repair can be handled independently or whether outside assistance is necessary.
  • Multi-tasks.  Is able to organize efforts and keeps track of commitments that may need to wait until time permits.
  • Manages third-party contractors and suppliers conducting maintenance and repair activities.
  • Follows Christian ideals and enjoys working in a faith-based environment.

Responsibilities: 

The primary responsibilities of the Facilities Maintenance Coordinator will include the following: 

  1. Conduct walkthroughs of the facilities and grounds to ensure all infrastructure systems are functioning and ensure the grounds are in proper order at the beginning and end of each day.  
  2. Perform or proactively schedule preventative maintenance and basic repairs to all church buildings and building systems. This will include, but not limited to:  
    1. HVAC systems
    2. Elevator
    3. Plumbing systems
    4. Electrical fixtures
    5. Fire suppression systems
    6. Kitchen equipment
  3. Basic repairs to our buildings related to drywall, brick, and stonework as well as minor painting and remodeling projects upon request  
  4. Periodic deep cleaning of carpets and vinyl or marble tile located in our buildings.
  5. Monitor condition of roofs and ensure rain gutters and drains are maintained.
  6. Maintain interior and external pest control in accordance with requirements for public and preschool facilities  
  7. Provide or coordinate preventative maintenance and basic repairs to church grounds beyond the services provided by the contracted lawn service provider. This will include, but not necessarily be limited to:  
    1. Monitor and schedule of maintenance for irrigation systems and maintenance of ground drainage systems
    2. Maintenance of all external lighting
    3. Patchwork of parking lot, as necessary
  8. Provide other support activities:
    1. Assist in the development and management of the facilities budget, including cost forecasting and expenditure tracking.
    2. Schedule and oversee daily cleaning of the facilities and rental support activities by custodial staff, as needed.  Perform custodial services as needed to supplement services provided by custodial staff.
    3. Order, maintain, and be accountable for supplies and tools needed to support maintenance activities.
    4. Manage vendor contracts and service agreements, ensuring compliance and cost-effectiveness.
    5. Present or discuss potential maintenance or improvement projects (preparing draft plans and cost estimates when requested) 
    6. Discuss performance of outside contractor(s)
    7. Perform periodic coordination with the Facilities Committee to assess the condition of facilities, review budgetary status, and discuss opportunities for efficiencies in facility operations.
    8. Maintain locks/keys for all buildings (provide support to Church Administrator to ensure list of locks, keys and personnel holding various keys is up to date) 

Qualifications: 

The individual should possess the following skills and experience: 

  • High school diploma and at least 3 years’ experience in facilities maintenance  
  • Solid understanding of technical aspects of plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems with supported certifications
  • Proven experience managing other employees 
  • Ability to keep track and report on daily activity
  • Proficiency in operating a computer, printer, email, and other office equipment 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with stakeholders and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of Greek Orthodox traditions and customs (preferred).
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for events and emergencies
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team of staff and volunteers.

Mandatory completion of youth safety program training of the Archdiocese and background check are required.
