Education Director

Location: Stars Academy at Holy Cross, Whitestone

Position Overview

Stars Academy at Holy Cross is seeking a dedicated, experienced, and highly organized (Early Childhood) Education Director to lead our private early childhood center. The Director will oversee daily operations, ensure compliance with all New York State and New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) regulations, support teaching staff, and foster a warm, collaborative school culture with an open-door approach for families and staff. The Director will take ownership of increasing enrollment by enthusiastically advertising, celebrating successes, and positioning Stars Academy as a premier early childhood program.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Oversee daily operations of the early childhood center, Stars Academy, ensuring a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment
  • Ensure full compliance with all New York State and NYC Department of Health rules, regulations, and licensing requirements as defined in Article 47
  • Design and manage staff schedules, classroom coverage, and required ratios
  • If less than 40 children in attendance, provide classroom coverage when needed
  • Willingness to work in support of center operations

Staff Support & Supervision

  • Support, mentor, and supervise teaching staff
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide constructive feedback
  • Support teachers with curriculum implementation, classroom management, and professional development
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment

Family & Community Engagement

  • Maintain an open-door policy for parents and staff
  • Establish frequent and two-way communication by meeting with parents to share student progress, address concerns, and build strong partnerships
  • Involve families in decision-making and goal setting for their child
  • Conduct parent workshops to equip families with knowledge, skills, and strategies to improve student outcomes
  • Promote and facilitate clear, respectful communication between families, teachers, and administration
  • Use of social media to highlight and share information about Stars Academy

Program Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain (high-quality)  research based early childhood programming aligned with best practices
  • Implementation of formal phonics program (Fundations) to Pre-Kindergarten class
  • Ensure health, safety, and educational standards are consistently met
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation required by DOH and center policies

Required Education & Certifications (New York State)

  • School Building Leader certification   
  • Master's degree or higher in Educational Leadership/Administration or School Leadership
  • New York State Teacher Certification (Birth–Grade 2 or Nursery–Grade 6) minimum of 3 years teaching experience with children under 6 years of age
  • Children’s Program Administrator Credential (CPAC) or other DOH-approved Director credential
  • Must meet all NYC Department of Health Director qualification requirements including
  • FDNY’s Certificate of Fitness F-07
  • NYC DOHMH Food Protection certificate
  • Current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR (and First Aid) certification
  • Completion of all required NYS/NYC DOH trainings, including but not limited to:
    • Mandated Reporter Training
    • Health & Safety Training
    • Additional trainings as required by DOH

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as an Early Childhood Director, Assistant Director, or Educational Administrator
  • Strong knowledge of DOH compliance, inspections, and licensing procedures
  • Experience working in a private early childhood or faith-based setting
