Director of Operations

Position Summary
The Director of Operations serves as the principal administrative and operational executive of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago. Under the direction of His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael, the Director of Operations ensures that all ministries, administrative functions, and initiatives operate in faithful alignment with the mission, values, and strategic vision of the Metropolis. That vision calls us to deepen our unity in Christ, build stronger parishes, and grow the Church—a mission realized through five core areas: supporting clergy, cultivating vibrant parishes, inspiring philanthropy, increasing engagement, and dedicating resources to sustainable growth.
The Director of Operations plays a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life by fostering operational excellence, organizational integrity, and a spirit of collaboration that empowers clergy, staff, and faithful alike. The Director of Operations provides strategic leadership, organizational management, and human resources expertise to guide the Metropolis in achieving these goals. The role requires an experienced church or nonprofit administrator with a proven ability to build organizational systems from the ground up, manage multi-department operations, and develop policies and procedures that enhance efficiency and strengthen ministry impact.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Organizational Management
- Lead and mentor staff across the Office, Finance, Communications, and Ministries to function as a cohesive, mission-driven team.
- Work in collaboration with the Office of the Chancellor to align administrative and pastoral initiatives that strengthen unity, parish life, and ministry support.
- Translate the Metropolitan’s pastoral and strategic direction into clear operational goals and measurable outcomes.
- Foster a culture of professionalism, mutual respect, and Orthodox Christian values across all departments.
- Oversee the consistent application of staff management practices, performance standards, and HR policies, ensuring fairness, compliance, and alignment with the Church’s mission.
- Serve as the principal liaison between His Eminence and operational staff, ensuring that directives are executed faithfully, efficiently, and in unity with the Metropolis’s broader leadership.
- Develop and implement clear operational frameworks that enhance collaboration and enable scalable growth across all departments and ministries.
Administrative & Operational Oversight
- Direct the daily operations of the Metropolis headquarters, including office administration, scheduling, facilities, and technology systems.
- Oversee all human resources functions, including hiring, onboarding, training, professional development, and performance evaluation.
- Develop, implement, and maintain HR and personnel policies that reflect both best practices and the values of the Church.
- Create and sustain operational systems and procedures that ensure efficiency, transparency, and compliance with Archdiocesan, civil, and nonprofit standards.
- Demonstrate the ability to design and implement organizational structures that promote effective communication and workflow across departments.
Department Oversight
Finance Department
- Oversee financial operations, including budgeting, reporting, and fiscal management.
- Collaborate with the Finance Committee to ensure transparency, responsible stewardship, and adherence to financial controls.
- Apply expertise in budgeting, audits, and grant management to strengthen the Metropolis’ financial stability.
Communications Department
- Direct internal and external communications to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with the Metropolis’s mission.
- Partner with His Eminence and Communications staff to enhance engagement with clergy, parishes, and the faithful.
- Ensure all publications and digital media reflect the vision and spiritual identity of the Metropolis.
Ministries Department
- Provide strategic oversight and administrative support to all Metropolis Ministries.
- Collaborate with the Office of the Chancellor and ministry leaders to improve coordination and resource sharing.
- Implement systems to track and evaluate ministry effectiveness and impact.
Strategic Planning & Implementation
- Partner with His Eminence and key members of the Metropolis Council to execute the strategic plan and its initiatives for the growth and vitality of the Metropolis.
- Monitor progress toward strategic goals and prepare regular reports for His Eminence and the Metropolis Council.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Human Resources, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum 7–10 years of senior leadership experience in operations, administration, or HR management, preferably in a faith-based or nonprofit setting.
- Demonstrated experience managing multi-department operations, staff development, and HR policy implementation.
- Proven ability to execute strategic plans, manage change, and maintain organizational excellence.
- Familiarity with the structure, ethos, and ministries of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America preferred.
- Exceptional communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- High degree of integrity, discretion, and commitment to the mission of the Church.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position based at the Metropolis offices.
- Travel within the Metropolis region as required.
- Occasional evening and weekend work for events, meetings, or conferences.
