Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology invites applications for a full-time administrative leadership role and faculty appointment as Director of Koinonia: Priestly Formation in Communion, a collaborative initiative of Holy Cross and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOA), its Metropolises, and parishes. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate is the administration of Koinonia; with a secondary limited teaching role as an assistant professor of pastoral care.

Koinonia is a collaboration between Holy Cross and Greek Orthodox parishes and metropolises to establish and support an intensive full-time, one-semester parish practicum internship for MDiv seminarians, with intentional opportunities for developing practical, catechetical, and pastoral/leadership skills along with continued personal and spiritual development. The position is supported by a Lilly Endowment Pathways for Tomorrow 2025 grant.

Position Summary

The Director of Koinonia reports to the dean of Holy Cross. The director is responsible for the overall leadership, coordination, and administration of the Koinonia initiative. The Director will:

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and ongoing refinement of the one‑semester parish Practicum for MDiv seminarians.
  • Coordinate closely with GOA Archdiocese, Metropolises, parish clergy mentors, and Holy Cross faculty to ensure high‑quality, formational parish placements across the United States.
  • Lead assessment, reporting, and communication efforts related to Koinonia’s outcomes and performance indicators.
  • Collaborate with institutional advancement leadership on matters related to the Koinonia Endowment and associated fundraising and visibility.
  • Serve as primary liaison between Koinonia and Lilly Endowment.

The Director is a full-time voting member of the faculty of Holy Cross and will be responsible for limited faculty committee work, student advising as assigned by the academic Dean of Holy Cross, and teaching one course per semester. In general, responsibilities of the position amount to 75% administrative (Director of Koinonia) and 25% teaching (Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care).

Key Administrative Responsibilities (75%)

Program Leadership & Administration
  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership and administrative oversight for all aspects of Koinonia.
  • Develop and manage annual program plans, timelines, and processes for the Practicum, MDiv integration, and related initiatives.
  • Supervise a part‑time program assistant and coordinate with other relevant staff and faculty.
  • Ensure appropriate use and tracking of grant resources; approve distribution of Koinonia funds in collaboration with the Academic Dean.
  • Prepare regular internal and external reports on program progress, challenges, and outcomes.
Practicum (Parish Internship) Oversight
  • Implement and refine the one‑semester, full‑time parish Practicum (12 credits) as the core of Koinonia.
  • Collaborate with the Practicum Placement Committee to:
    • Identify and approve host parishes in collaboration with Metropolis chancellors.
    • Match seminarians with appropriate parish sites, taking into account student preparation and parish context.
  • Coordinate training, resources, and ongoing support for parish priest mentors before, during, and after each Practicum cycle.
  • Ensure that interns are fully immersed in parish life, including youth ministry, preaching, parish administration, catechesis, and exposure to Greek‑American Orthodox ethos.
  • Facilitate bi‑weekly contact structures (e.g., Zoom meetings with pastoral care faculty) and other programmatic supports for seminarians in the field.
Assessment & Evaluation
  • Work with pastoral care faculty and assessment coordinator to:
    • Implement competency‑based evaluations in the four primary outcome areas: Greek Orthodox ethos, pastoral sensitivity, catechetical/teaching skills, and servant leadership.
    • Design, distribute, and interpret student, mentor, and site evaluations (surveys, interviews, focus groups).
    • Integrate Practicum data into broader MDiv student assessment processes and institutional assessment.
  • Provide annual summary reports to the Academic Dean and faculty, including recommendations for program adjustment.
Collaboration & Governance
  • Serve as principal liaison between Holy Cross and collaborating GOA structures (Archdiocese, Metropolises, parishes) for all Koinonia‑related matters.
  • Staff and work closely with the Koinonia Advisory Board, contributing to vision, planning, implementation, and the identification of best practices.
  • Coordinate with the MDiv revision committee to ensure that Practicum experience and assessment findings inform curricular changes and sequencing.
  • Support the Koinonia Endowment Governance Committee with appropriate program data and narrative for donor cultivation and reporting.
Communication & External Relations
  • Maintain regular, structured communication with parish priest mentors and Metropolis chancellors (e.g., orientation sessions, monthly virtual meetings, year‑end evaluations).
  • Present Koinonia’s work and outcomes at faculty meetings, GOA clergy gatherings, and other relevant forums.
  • Oversee the Koinonia section of the HCHC website, including stories highlighting host parishes and seminarian experiences, and other outward‑facing communications that advance recruitment and fundraising.
  • Collaborate with institutional advancement to support donor engagement for the Koinonia Endowment and related initiatives.

Key Faculty Responsibilities (25%)

  • Teach one course per semester
  • Collaborate closely with pastoral care faculty
  • Assist with student advisement
  • Assist with Field Education

Qualifications

Required
  • A graduate theological degree, preferably the MDiv.
  • Significant experience in parish ministry and/or Orthodox theological education, with a deep familiarity with the pastoral realities of Greek Orthodox parish life.
  • A practicing Orthodox Christian
  • Demonstrated understanding of the ethos, liturgical life, and pastoral needs of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America or closely related Orthodox contexts.
  • Proven administrative and organizational skills, including project management, program implementation, and effective use of data for decision‑making.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with clergy, lay leaders, faculty, and students.
  • Experience with online or hybrid theological education environments, or willingness and capacity to learn quickly.
Preferred
  • A PhD, or equivalent, in pastoral care or related field.
  • Teaching and research expertise in homiletics or Orthodox catechism
  • Ordination in the Orthodox Church, preferably within the GOA (or substantial experience working within GOA parishes and Metropolises).
  • Experience in field education, clinical pastoral education, internship coordination, or similar formation‑oriented programs.
  • Experience with assessment, accreditation‑related evaluation, or institutional research in a theological or higher education setting.
  • Familiarity with fundraising, donor relations, or advancement work in a church or educational context.
  • Knowledge of or exposure to Greek language and Greek‑American Orthodox culture.

Appointment & Compensation

This is a full‑time position based at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. Compensation and benefits are commensurate with qualifications and experience and in accordance with Hellenic College Holy Cross policies and salary scales.
