Controller

Under the direction and supervision of the CFO/Treasurer, the Controller shall work closely with CFO/Treasurer and other archdiocese staff members to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the financial records and reports, lead the day-to-day financial/accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance with applicable regulations. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and a proven history in financial leadership within the non-profit sector.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee day to day financial operations including cash flow, accounting, bill payments/invoicing, budgeting, financial reporting, accounts payable & receivable, payroll, general ledger, and auditing.
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of the annual budget.
  • Prepare monthly and annual reconciliations, financial statements, and other reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual audit.
  • Review and approve all disbursements.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls.
  • Maintain the physical records of the archdiocese.
  • Review and monitor all sources of income and ensure they are properly accounted for in the books and records of the archdiocese.
  • Oversee the archdiocese’s employee benefit plans including payroll, health insurance, retirement, and disability insurance.
  • Lead and mentor the Finance Department staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Provide direction to parishes and clergy regarding church financial matters and procedures, as requested.
  • Provide accounting guidance on restricted accounts and investments.
  • Provide guidance and assist the Order of St. Ignatius and Antiochian Village finance staffs.
  • Assist all department heads in preparation of their annual budgets providing guidance on the archdiocese’s policies and procedures.
  • Attend Finance Committee, Department and Board of Trustee meetings, as requested.
  • Meet with bishops and clergy concerning the finances of the archdiocese, as requested.
  • Assist with the periodic audit and review of the archdiocese retirement account.
  • Prepare of the Archdiocese Annual Report.
  • Review annual W-2 and 1099 reports.
  • Prepare the annual property tax exemption certificates.
  • Represent the archdiocese for tax and accounting matters in consultation with legal counsel.
  • Oversee and administer payroll systems and procedures.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Education and Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Active CPA license.
  • Minimum of 3-6 years of progressive experience in finance, with at least 2 years within a nonprofit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and regulations.
  • Excellent communication, organization, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
