Church Sexton - Summer

Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago is a vibrant parish committed to preserving and living out the traditions of the Orthodox Christian faith. Our community is centered on worship, service, and fellowship, and we take great care in maintaining a sacred and welcoming space for all who enter.

We are seeking a reliable and reverent Sexton to support the daily operations and liturgical life of the parish. This is a seasonal summer position while our current Sexton is away, with the opportunity to develop into a long-term role. This position plays a vital role in preparing the church for services and ensuring that the sacred space is maintained with care and respect.

Job Responsibilities

  • Open and close the church for all services
  • Light and extinguish oil lamps
  • Prepare Prosfora (liturgical bread)
  • Clean and maintain church and administrative spaces
  • Set up and break down for baptisms, weddings, and funerals ($75 additional compensation per service)
  • Prepare church grounds as needed (e.g., parking arrangements for services)
  • Replenish candles and Pangari supplies
  • Assist with general parish needs as they arise

Expectations

  • Maintain a respectful and reverent presence in a sacred environment
  • Be dependable, punctual, and detail-oriented
  • Availability for evenings, weekends, and major feast days
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative

Education/Knowledge Requirements

  • Practicing member of the Orthodox Church (required due to altar responsibilities)
  • Familiarity with Orthodox liturgical practices strongly preferred
  • Basic custodial or facility experience is helpful
  • Physically able to perform light maintenance and cleaning tasks

Additional Information

  • Seasonal summer position with potential for long-term growth
  • Additional compensation provided for special services (baptisms, weddings, funerals)
