Chanter/Pastoral Assistant

Job Summary:

  • We are a diverse and growing parish seeking a hybrid position of Chanter / Pastoral Assistant in the Fall of 2026. This person will serve as Head Chanter and assist with developing and coordinating ministries of the parish. The position has certain fundamental responsibilities, yet can be tailored to a considerable extent based on the candidate’s experience, skills, and passions.  

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Liturgical Life / Chanting
    • Work with Parish Priest to plan, oversee, and execute the liturgical and sacramental life of the parish
    • Lead others at the chant stand
    • Facilitate chant development
    • Coordinate Sunday School hymnology initiatives
  • Youth Ministry
    • Work with Parish Priest and volunteers to coordinate youth ministries of all ages, from Little Angels to Young Adults
    • Develop content as needed
    • Teach and facilitate as needed
  • Adult Education and Ministries
    • Assist with Spiritual Formation Ministry
    • Assist with evangelism, catechism, and general faith enrichment
  • Pan-Orthodox Ministry
    • Involvement in our new Grand Rapids FOCUS Chapter, Shepherds of Independence, which provides housing for 50 individuals who struggle with homelessness.
    • Liturgical con-celebrations
    • Vacation Church School 
  • Support for priest, parish council, and ministry leaders as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Chanting proficiency in English; ability to read Byzantine and/or Western notation; ability to lead others at the chant stand
  • Comfortable in diverse parish setting, with a variety of ethnicities and converts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to flex schedule as needed.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Empathy, friendliness, discretion and confidentiality are paramount.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and communicate accordingly.

Education and Experience:

  • Master of Divinity preferred but not required.
  • Ministry experience at parish level preferred but not required. 

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $50,000 – $55,000 salary, based on experience; paid time off; health insurance stipend; 403B retirement plan (when implemented by Archdiocese)
