Chief Financial Officer
Organizational Summary:
FOCUS North America is a national movement of Orthodox Christians, united in faith and joined by a desire to live out Christ’s call to serve the poor in communities across America. FOCUS currently operates Centers in twelve cities across the country and provides additional service programs (including youth and young adult ministry opportunities) nationwide.
As an expression of Christ’s love, FOCUS serves the poor by bringing together Orthodox Christians and community partners to provide food, occupation, clothing, understanding, and shelter and other assistance to address the needs of local communities.

The Chief Financial Officer is a fully remote position which reports to the organization’s Executive Director. Travel required three to four times per year.
Primary responsibilities include:
Financial Accounting:
- Hands-on management of the general ledger and all related transactions
- Month-end close and financial statement preparation for the Board and local Center Directors including analysis of major variances of actual results to the Board approved budget
- Cash management and reconciliations
- Coordinate and assure accuracy between the accounting and donor management systems
- Assure all bills are paid and expenses accurately recorded from the various systems including the credit card management system
- Oversee the documentation for and recording of all relevant gift-in-kind revenue and expense transactions
- Manage the successful completion of the external financial audit
- Manage the annual budget process and prepare reports for Board review and approval
- Generate budget reports for Center Directors with monthly spreads that represent expected results
HR / Payroll:
- Take a lead role in assuring payroll and HR related functions are accurately maintained and processed
- Primary contact for contracted payroll and human resource management systems
- Ensure compliance with all Department of Labor and payroll taxing authorities’ requirements
- Management of all employee insurances and benefits including health, life, voluntary insurances, and retirement plans
Non-profit management:
- Prepare and file annual IRS form 990 after review and approval by the Board
- Manage annual state registration renewals and annual charity registrations through the contracted service provider
- Oversee insurance requirements and work with brokers to complete annual renewals
- Complete the annual Combined Federated Campaign enrollment
Leadership:
- Work collaboratively with other members of the Executive Team to assure that FOCUS is fulfilling its mission and meeting Board approved growth and planning objectives
- Identify areas of risk for consideration by Executive Team and Board, as appropriate
- Provide support for the local Center and Program Directors to assure they have all of the information and assistance they need to successfully fulfill their local ministry objectives
- Work collaboratively with the Board’s Finance Committee to manage investment of available cash balances (annual funds, endowments, etc)
Experience and education:
- Bachelor degree in accounting, business management, or similar field
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and their relevancy to the non-profit environment
- Non-profit accounting experience including general ledger management, financial statement preparation, and financial auditing
- Excellent analytically and data analysis skills preferably utilizing business management tools such as Excel
Highly preferred but not required:
- Working knowledge of QuickBooks
- Prior experience with completion of IRS form 990
- HR and Employee relations practices and compliance
- Facilities management background and experience
- Experience with database management, data extraction, and reporting especially as it relates to donors and donation tracking (particularly DonorPerfect).
