Summary

The Camping Ministries Coordinator (CMC) is the primary administrator responsible for overseeing the development, growth, promotion, management, marketing, fundraising, staffing and well-being of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh’s summer camp and retreat ministry. The CMC will be responsible for upholding the mission of the Metropolis of Pittsburgh’s Camping Ministry to “lead young people to Christ in an Orthodox Christian environment where they can learn and experience their faith through education, recreation, worship, fellowship and fun.”

General Responsibilities

  • Initiate all planning and preparation as well as debriefing and evaluation meetings for the Metropolis of Pittsburgh Camp (MPC) program events, including but not limited to the summer camp program and GOYA retreats.
  • Facilitate communications with the Y2AM Director, Metropolis staff, clergy, parishes and volunteers to engage people in camp events, including public relations materials, news stories, social media posts and website content.
  • Oversee staff application, acceptance, training, orientation, and evaluation procedures as well as all camper registration for summer camp and retreats, including financial aid, invoicing, and accurate record-keeping for cancellations and refunds.
  • Serve as on-site director for all youth camping program events and assists Y2AM Director with Family Camp and Young Adult Retreats.
  • Operate as liaison between Metropolis and Carpatho-Russian Diocese Camp Staff (Administration and Staff).
  • Collaborate with the MPC Committee and Y2AM Director to:
    • Develop camping and retreat curriculums that teach the tenets of the Orthodox church through creative, experiential, Christ-centered programing.
    • Ensure that all events, programs, policies, forms, and paperwork adhere to Metropolis and Archdiocesan safety standards and protocols.
    • Work in conjunction with the camp medical advisory committee/camp medical director for all camp related medical protocols including registration requirements, medical emergencies & medical staffing.
    • Oversee and develop the branding, marketing, and sales of MPC merchandising.
  • Maintain fiscal responsibility for the MPC program by providing budget reports, preparing periodic progress reports and detailed event spreadsheets which track all expenses, invoices, check requests and necessary information to be submitted to the Y2AM Director.
  • Spearhead fundraising campaigns to offset existing camp fees, fund existing MPC scholarship programs, and advance donor participation through various avenues, such as the Amazon Wishlist.
  • Promote the continued success and growth of MPC through regular travel/visits/presentations to parishes across the Metropolis to publicly speak, present and promote the MPC program, its mission, and its purpose to potential campers, parents, and donors. (Required number of parish visit determined by the Y2AM Director will include, but not limited to “Camp Sunday” visits, 1-2 weeks before registration opens.)
  • Engage former campers/staff alumni in volunteer positions to enhance the program and provide ongoing support and provide institutional knowledge by developing the MPC History and Archival data system.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • Knowledgeable on the social, emotional, physical and spiritual developmental needs of youth
    • Ability to communicate and work with parents and families in all aspects of the camping ministry
    • American Camping Association best practices preferred
    • Experience with the Metropolis of Pittsburgh camp program (or similar Greek Orthodox camping program)
    • Basic word processing, typing
    • Familiarity with various software including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Publisher, Canva, Constant Contact
    • General office and organizational skills
  • Competencies:
    • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading, and public speaking
    • Ability to implement crisis and risk management procedures.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments from a variety of staff and volunteers
    • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and virtually, with high sensitivity to campers, parents and clergy
    • Ability to work independently to accomplish projects
    • Ability to design and implement effective promotional campaigns via print materials email, the website, video, and social media
    • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required. Continuing education in youth development, Orthodox youth ministry, and safety will be provided as part of the position.
  • Experience: Previous volunteer coordination and camp program experience required.
  • Certifications: Must pass child abuse and criminal background checks. Other training courses and certifications as deemed appropriate by Metropolis.
  • Required Office Hours: The position will be Full-Time Exempt.

Contacts/Key Relationships

  • Report to Y2AM Director on a regular basis on progress of all programs.
  • Work very closely with MPC Committee and its chair(s) on implementation of the vision of the committee within the program.
  • Works with Metropolis staff, Camp Nazareth staff, MPC program staff, Orthodox clergy and volunteers.
  • Cooperates with other Archdiocesan camp directors to learn/exchange best practices, trends and new requirements necessary to ensure safe, legal and liability-informed camping programs.

Working Conditions

  • Must be on site for meetings in the Pittsburgh area and at Metropolis offices in Pittsburgh/Washington prior to summer camp and retreats, with monthly travel to various parishes across the Metropolis, most often on weekends
  • Required travel and overnight accommodation during MPC events
  • Required travel and overnight accommodation during Metropolis and/or Archdiocesan conferences as directed by Chancellor
  • Regular business attire during office hours at Metropolis
  • Business casual or casual, as appropriate, during camp program events. Attire must be modest with respect to working conditions with young people and a faith-based atmosphere
  • Extensive typing, computer-based work and cellular telephone work required
