Middle School Music Teacher

Reports to: Head of Early Childhood & Lower School
Status: Salaried/Exempt
Start Date: July 31, 2024
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM; additional time as needed for rehearsals, performances, after-school meetings, and professional development.


  • Teach daily 5th-8th grade general music classes, ensemble classes, and extracurricular vocal ensembles
  • Direct and rehearse school ensembles in preparation for performances
  • Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans using diverse musical styles to teach music theory, technology, history, performance, and appreciation
  • Instruct students in choral and solo singing techniques
  • Collaborate with the Middle School Theater Arts Teacher to produce grade-level musicals
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters creativity and self-expression
  • Assess student progress, provide constructive feedback, and maintain accurate records
  • Stay up-to-date on current music education trends and best practices
  • Actively engage in a robust assortment of faculty professional development opportunities 
  • Utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials that reflect an understanding of various learning styles
  • Implement classroom management techniques that align with the school’s culture
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents and students through a variety of means, including face-to-face conversations, phone calls, emails, texts, and conferences
  • Potentially advise a group of students and attend an annual overnight class trip
  • Participate in school events and community-service projects
  • Fulfill other duties as requested


  • Actions and values that align with the AOS Mission
  • Bachelor’s degree in music education or a related field; master’s degree preferred
  • Strong musicianship in a broad array of musical styles and genres
  • Accomplished vocal musician with functional classroom piano and/or guitar skills; ability to develop a middle school instrumental program would be advantageous
  • Minimum three years teaching experience; middle school experience preferred
  • Experience using multiple pedagogical strategies to build and assess student skills and knowledge
  • Knowledge of adolescent development
  • Knowledge of research-based practices for effective middle school instruction
