8th Grade History Teacher

Annunciation Orthodox School (AOS) seeks a committed and engaging U.S. history teacher who demonstrates proficiency in progressive pedagogies and consistently utilizes student-centered techniques. Reports to: Head of Middle School Status: Salaried/Exempt Start Date: August 1, 2023 Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm; additional time as needed for after-school meetings and professional development.

Responsibilities:

• Teach daily 8th grade U.S. history classes

• Engage students in collaborative discussions on topics, texts, and issues relevant to U.S history

• Guide students as they integrate reading, writing, research, and technology skills to complete research projects

• Teach students strategies for reading and analyzing nonfiction texts 

• Utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials that reflect an understanding of various learning styles

• Create lesson plans based on sound, research-based methods of instruction

• In collaboration with the History Department and the Humanities Coordinator, develop and/or utilize vertically aligned history curriculum 

• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of adolescent students

• Conduct ongoing formal and informal assessment of student achievement

• Implement classroom-management techniques that align with the school’s culture

• Establish and maintain open communication with parents and students through a variety of means, including face-to-face conversations, phone calls, emails, texts, and conferences

• Communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the school community

• Show proficiency with Google Suite for Education productivity tools

• Integrate technology into the curriculum to strengthen the teaching/learning process

• Attend annual grade-level class trip (typically three to four days)

• Serve as an academic advisor to a group of students

• Participate in school events and community service projects

• Actively engage in a robust assortment of faculty professional development opportunities offered to AOS teachers

• Fulfill other duties as requested

 

Qualifications:

• Actions and values that align with the AOS Mission 

• Bachelor’s degree in education or history with an emphasis on history education; Master’s degree preferred

• Minimum three years history teaching experience; Middle school history experience preferred

• Experience using multiple pedagogical strategies to build and assess student skills and knowledge

• Knowledge of research-based practices for effective middle school instruction and adolescent development

• Demonstrated knowledge of and love for working with middle school students with great energy, playfulness, and understanding
