Protopsaltis

Purpose: In order to be proactive in serving the spiritual needs of our Parish, we are formally establishing the position of “Protopsaltis/Head Chanter.” 

 

Qualifications: The individual applying for this position must be proficient in Byzantine Musical Notation as well as Western Musical Notation with a strong command of both the Greek and English Languages. They must also be a dedicated and committed Orthodox Christian who will humbly offer their gifts and talents assisting the faithful in this important component of Orthodox worship. They must also cooperate fully with and always follow the direction of the clergy. 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(Including but not limited to)

 

  • Above all, to assist the Clergy in chanting ALL the worship services of the Ecclesiastical year under the direction of the Clergy.
  • To participate in both the Male and Mixed Choirs as needed.
  • Recruit and mentor volunteers interested in learning the Byzantine Ecclesiastical music of our Orthodox Worship services.

Liturgical

  • To be present at all worship services, (i.e. Orthros, Liturgy, Paraklisis, Vespers, Compline, etc.) and all sacraments (i.e. Weddings, Baptisms, Unction, Funerals, etc.) to assist the Clergy; in chanting the services.

 

Education

  • To teach about Byzantine Ecclesiastical music, as needed in the Annunciation Day School, Annunciation Afternoon Greek School and Sunday Catechetical School.
  • To teach and direct the St. Romanos Youth Choir.
  • To establish and direct a Byzantine Choir that can participate in services, concerts, performances, etc.

Compensation

  • To be determined by the Clergy and Parish Council with each applicant based on a combination housing, (possibly making available one of our parish homes) and salary.
