Middle School Religion Teacher
Annunciation Orthodox School (AOS) seeks a devoted religion teacher who demonstrates proficiency in both progressive and traditional pedagogies, while consistently utilizing student-centered techniques. Strong candidates will be energetic, organized, passionate about learning, and dedicated to developing students’ character and spirituality. This position provides a unique opportunity to aid students in their spiritual journey by incorporating modern pedagogical techniques in service of building character and a knowledge of Orthodox Christianity.
Reports to: Head of Middle School
Status: Salaried/Exempt
Start Date: August 3, 2023
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm; additional time as needed for after-school meetings and professional development.
Responsibilities:
- Teach daily 5th - 8th grade religion classes rooted in the Greek Orthodox Church
- Adapt and implement a Greek Orthodox religious curriculum that reflects the mission, core values, and identity of Orthodox Christianity and AOS
- Utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials that reflect an understanding of various learning styles
- Create lesson plans based on sound, research-based methods of instruction
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual development of adolescent students
- Conduct ongoing formal and informal assessment of student achievement
- Implement classroom management techniques that align with the school’s culture
- Establish and maintain open communication with parents and students through a variety of means, including face-to-face conversations, phone calls, emails, texts, and conferences
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the school community
- Show proficiency with Google Suite for Education productivity tools
- Integrate technology into the curriculum to strengthen the teaching/learning process
- Attend annual grade-level class trip if needed (typically three to four days)
- Serve as an academic advisor to a group of students if needed
- Participate in school events and community service projects
- Actively engage in a robust assortment of faculty professional development opportunities offered to AOS teachers
- Fulfill other duties as requested
Qualifications:
- Orthodox Christian in good canonical standing in the Greek Orthodox Church
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field; Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum three years teaching experience; Middle school experience preferred
- Experience using multiple pedagogical strategies to build and assess student skills and knowledge
- Knowledge of adolescent development
- Knowledge of research-based practices for effective middle school instruction
