6th Grade Language Arts Teacher

Responsibilities:

Teach daily 6th grade English Language Arts classes

Challenge students to analyze and comprehend literary and informational texts
-
Inspire students to be strong analytical and creative writers who integrate concepts learned through grammar and vocabulary instruction into their writing

Teach students to understand and use literary devices such as personification, allusions, and imagery
-
Utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials that reflect an understanding of various learning styles
-
Create lesson plans based on sound, research-based methods of instruction
-
In collaboration with the English Department and the Humanities Coordinator, develop and/or utilize vertically aligned English Language Arts curriculum
-
Teach a unit on public speaking as a part of AOS’ Agape Signature Program
-
Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of adolescent students
-
Conduct ongoing formal and informal assessment of student achievement
-
Implement classroom-management techniques that align with the school’s culture
-
Establish and maintain open communication with parents and students through a variety of means, including face-to-face conversations, phone calls, emails, texts, and conferences

Communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the school community
-
Demonstrate proficiency with Google Suite for Education productivity tools
-
Integrate technology into the curriculum to strengthen the teaching/learning process
-
Attend an annual grade-level class trip (typically three to four days)

Serve as an academic advisor to a group of students
-
Participate in school events and community service projects
-
Actively engage in a robust assortment of faculty professional development opportunities offered to AOS teachers

Fulfill other duties as requested
Qualifications:
-

Bachelor’s degree in education or English; Master’s degree preferred
-
Minimum three years English Language Arts teaching experience; middle school English Language Arts experience preferred

Experience using multiple pedagogical strategies to build and assess student reading comprehension skills, written comprehension skills and critical thinking

Knowledge of research-based practices for effective middle school instruction and adolescent development
-
Demonstrated knowledge of and love for working with middle school students with great energy, playfulness, and understanding
