Job Description 

TITLE:  Custodian 


The custodial staff reports primarily to the Facilities Manager and/or the Chairman of the Building and Maintenance Committee, and in parallel is at the disposal of the Proistamenos.  


The custodial staff is responsible for performing the cleaning, minor maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties to ensure that the St. John building complex and grounds are maintained in a safe, secure, healthy and sanitary manner.  The custodian is the go-to person for any building needs; works and interacts daily with the church clergy, church staff, and school staff.  


Fulfilling the responsibilities of a custodian is physically demanding.  The custodian spends much of the time standing, walking, lifting, sweeping, general cleaning, and removing trash.  Regular set up and take down of tables and chairs is also a regular part of the position.  

Work is primarily performed indoors, in offices, classrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and common areas. Outside work is also required, including but not limited to grounds keeping, and snow removal. 


Full-time work determined by the calendar of the Church and communicated by the Facilities Manager.  



  • These are determined and provided by the Lead Custodian and are subject to change due to the needs of the community.  Examples include: 
  • Keep the building clean, attractive and well maintained, inside and out 
  • Cleaning bathrooms in the church, office, and school 
  • Removing trash from offices and kitchen and dining areas 
  • Taking care of the duties in the Main Church and Chapels 
  • Maintain attractive grounds, performing basic functions outdoors such as care of flowerbeds, watering, shoveling snow and other maintenance duties 
  • Perform minor repairs, including but not limited to masonry, electrical systems, plumbing and immediate temporary repairs in an emergency 
  • Set up and take down the sanctuary and rooms as needed for classes and meetings. 
  • Distributing heavy boxes/mail to school as needed 
  • Secures the buildings and checks grounds regularly 
  • Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Custodian and/or Church Administrator (check daily task lists) 


Candidates/incumbents must meet the minimum qualifications as detailed or a combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.  

Education:  Graduation from high school preferred. 

Experience:  One year of custodial experience.  Custodial and building maintenance in a church and/or school setting preferred.

Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, or walking. Must be able to work safely in an environment contacting cleaning materials, dust and noise. Routinely required to work under inclement weather conditions.  Attend work on a regular basis.
