Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Lead Custodian is the primary member of the facilities team, responsible for ensuring that the St. John the Baptist building complex and grounds are maintained in a safe, secure, healthy and sanitary manner. This position serves as the head of the custodial staff (anywhere from 1-3 staff members at any time), supervising their work and guiding them in their responsibilities. In addition, this individual will perform maintenance, cleaning, and other miscellaneous duties.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Work is primarily physical (at times up to 50 lbs) and requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities.

SCHEDULE:           

Year round, weekly schedule is determined by the Building & Maintenance Committee.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attend Building & Grounds Committee meetings

Consult regularly with the various members of Parish Leadership

Oversee, schedule, train and regularly evaluate the quantity and quality of work for the custodial staff, contractors, vendors, grounds keepers, and church members who volunteer for maintenance responsibilities and create and check task lists for them

Promote a positive team attitude with employees and volunteers

Negotiate needs assessment, finances and scheduling with contractors

Lead and coordinate HVAC, plumbing, electrical, custodial and security

Keep the churches and buildings clean, attractive and well maintained

Maintain adequate supplies and products necessary to clean buildings and grounds

Make minor repairs to equipment and furniture as needed

Perform outdoor maintenance responsibilities (i.e., cutting grass, shoveling, and other necessary duties)

Set up and take down of furniture and equipment as required for various

Lifting and distribution of shipments and mail

Raise and lower flags (per direction)

Disarming property at beginning of day and securing building/alarming building at end of the day

Conducting walk-through of property/inspections

Special projects as needed

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education:  High school diploma required. College Degree preferred. English proficiency required. Knowledge of HVAC, basic electrical and plumbing. Basic understanding of computer applications.

Experience: Three years of custodial experience required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Excellent organizational and planning skills

24-hour availability for emergencies only

Supervisory and management skills

Ability to lead custodial team

Ability and desire to communicate effectively with church employees and volunteers

Ability to work independently

Ability to prioritize and multi-task, ability to be flexible
