Hellenic College Holy Cross (HCHC) is the intellectual, educational and spiritual center of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, stimulating, developing, and sustaining ordained and lay vocations for service to Church and society based on faith. HCHC collaborates with the Orthodox Church affiliated institutions and ministries, and offers opportunities for lifelong learning.


Position Summary:


The Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) is a key member of the senior management team reporting directly to the President and is responsible for developing, leading, managing and promoting all aspects of the advancement efforts for HCHC. The VPIA provides strategic leadership to the development team, and conceives and implements innovative initiatives to support institutional goals while achieving measurable objectives that result in increased levels of philanthropic support, diversified funding streams and broad institutional exposure and public awareness. Development categories include Annual Giving, major gifts, special projects, special events, capital campaigns, planned giving, corporate outreach, membership groups, and government and foundation grants.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of the senior staff and maintain close working relationships with members of the Board of Trustees and key alumni/friends.
  • Work closely with the President in all phases of his advancement and campaign leadership activities.
  • Identifies private, public, and corporate/foundation sources of funding.
  • Maintain a dynamic portfolio of major gift prospects in all phases of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Exhibits knowledge of philosophy of higher education philanthropy and it potential effects on faculty success and student performance.
  • Annually prepares a five-year strategic development plan for HCHC with measurable annual outcomes congruent with College growth plans.
  • Execute existing campaign plans and create future campaign initiatives in support of a comprehensive campaign.
  • Responds to private donor requirements or requests.
  • Working with direct reports, develop annual plans and budgets for Alumni Relations, Annual Scholarship Fund, Gift Planning, Development, and Capital Campaigns.
  • Direct, coach, evaluate, and inspire direct reports toward accountable, goal-oriented outcomes.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty and administrative staff whose cooperation is essential to effective development programs.
  • Develop effective internal and external messaging and methods of communication in collaboration with the Marketing and Communications department.
  • Serve as a College advocate in the community and build relationships that link the College with the community.
  • Serves as key liason to the Foundation for HCHC.
  • Writes proposals and seeks fund through various direct or indirect approaches.
  • Acquires non cash contributions.
  • Develops advocacy relationships.
  • Responds to government agency requirements and requests, and ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Sets the IA budget and is responsible for revenue and expenditures.
  • Leads, manages, motivates, and mentors IA team members, and fosters personal and professional development.
  • Leads, provides support, and attends fundraising and and donor cutivation events as necessary.
  • Negotiates agreements and contracts.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Required Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communications.
  • Proficient in MS Office; Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising database system.
  • Cost and fund accounting, and marketing/sales experience.
  • Excellent supervision, leadership, team-building, negotiating and contracting skills.
  • Must be able to establish priorities, write proposals, and interpret and comply with rules and regulations.
  • Must be politically astute.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data.
  • Experience planning and setting strategic direction for fund raising initiatives.
  • Possess both the personal characteristics and skills that will create and maintain excitement for supporting HCHC.
  • Proven understanding of how to utilize social media and emerging new media.
  • Solid judgement and decision making capability.



Education & Experience:

  • BS in a related field required; Masters preferred.
  • 10-15 years of increasing responsibility in Institutional Advancement.
  • 5 -8 years experience as a higher education development leader.
  • Experience leading and/or supporting a major gift campaign desirable.
