Camping Ministries Coordinator

Job Description

Summary

The Camp Ministries Coordinator (CMC) is the primary administrator for all Metropolis summer camp and camp-related ministries, overseeing the development and management of program, human resource, and marketing operations. The CMC’s primary function is to implement the Metropolis’ summer camp program,  spring/fall retreats for youth and families.  The CMC will uphold the mission of the Metropolis Camp Ministry, leading young people to Christ in an Orthodox Christian environment where they can learn and experience their faith through education, recreation, worship, fellowship and fun. The CMC will directly manage individual volunteers and other camp related full- and part-time staff. 

 

General Responsibilities

  1. Works closely with Metropolis Camp Committee to assess and develop summer camp program curricula.
  2. Oversees counselor application, acceptance, training, orientation, and evaluation procedures. 
  3. Initiates all planning and preparation as well as debriefing and evaluation meetings for camping program events.
  4. Serves as on-site director for all camping program events.
  5. Serves as liaison between Metropolis and Carpatho-Russian Diocese Camp Administration/Staff.
  6. Travels and speaks publicly to promote the Metropolis, camp program, its mission, and to advance donor and volunteer development.  
  7. Ensures that all events and programs adhere to Metropolis and Archdiocesan standards and protocols. 
  8. Facilitates communications with Youth Director, Metropolis staff, donors, alumni, and volunteers to engage people in camp events. 
  9. Data entry and module creation for all camp event registrations and evaluations. 
  10. Communications for camp program: public relations materials, news stories, website content, etc.
  11. Prepares budgets and provides periodic progress reports to staff directors for each event project; keep track of event finances including check requests, invoicing, and reporting.
  12. Like other full-time members of the Metropolis staff, participates fully in the planning and execution of key Metropolis events – Clergy-Laity, open house, etc.

Contacts/Key Relationships

  • Reports to Chancellor on a regular basis on progress of programs;
  • Works very closely with Metropolis summer camp committee and its chair(s) on implementation of the vision of the committee within the program
  • Works with Metropolis staff, camp program staff, communications staff,  Orthodox clergy and volunteers, Metropolis Council and Youth Commission.
  • Cooperates with other Archdiocesan camp directors to learn/exchange best practices, trends and new requirements necessary to ensure safe, legal and liability-informed camping programs.

 

Working Conditions

Stationed at Metropolis offices in Pittsburgh, with regular travel to various parishes across the Metropolis.  Required travel and overnight accommodations during camping program events.  Required travel and overnight accommodation during Metropolis and/or Archdiocesan conferences as directed by Chancellor.  Regular business attire during office hours at Metropolis.  Business casual or casual, as appropriate, during camp program events.  Attire must be modest with respect to working conditions with young people and a faith-based atmosphere.  Extensive typing, computer-based work and cellular telephone work required.


Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and Skills:  Knowledgeable on developmental needs of youth; American Camping Association best practices; knowledge of Metropolis of Pittsburgh camp program (or similar Greek Orthodox camping program); Basic word processing, typing; familiarity with various software including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Publisher; and general office skills.
  • Competencies: Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading skills, and speaking. Ability to implement crisis and risk management procedures. Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments from a variety of staff and volunteers. Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high sensitivity to campers, parents and clergy.  Ability to accomplish projects with little supervision.  Ability to design and implement effective promotional campaigns via print materials, email, the website, video, and social media.
  • Education: Master of Divinity preferred.  Continuing education in youth development, Orthodox youth ministry, and safety will be provided as part of the position. 
  • Experience: Previous volunteer coordination and camp program experience preferred.
  • Certifications: Must pass child abuse and criminal background checks.  Other trainings and certifications as deemed appropriate by Metropolis.
