YOUTH DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION


GENERAL:


1.    Personal commitment to developing and sustaining a life in Christ.

2.    Commitment to the daily study of the Holy Scriptures and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

3.    Continuing personal education.

4.    Devotion to the Holy Orthodox Church in all facets of life.

5.    Commitment to working with and developing personal relationships with the youth of Sts.

Constantine and Helen.


LITURGICAL:


To attend all Divine Services at Sts. Constantine and Helen, and participating by singing in the choir/chanting, if applicable.


YOUTH DEPARTMENT:


1.    To serve as a spiritual leader for all the youth of Sts. Constantine and Helen through teaching and personal example.

2.    To ensure the physical, emotional and spiritual safety of any youth during a church sponsored event.

3.    To plan and facilitate educational, service/outreach, spiritual and social activities for all the youth of Sts. Constantine and Helen

4.    To minister and facilitate the organized events of the Youth Department:

  • “Mother’s Day Out”– Ages 3-5 (Open to Orthodox & Non Orthodox), A Two-day week program (9-2p)

  • “J.O.Y. Club” (Junior Orthodox Youth – Ages 5-8) Monthly event/outing, including Teaching/Bible Study

  • Pre-Teens – (Ages 9-12) Monthly event/outing, including Teaching/Bible Study

  • SOYO – (Ages 13-18) Weekly Bible Study, Monthly outing/social outreach, Plan/Attend Retreats/CSR/diocese events

  • OCF – College Age (if applicable)

5.    To organize and be present at all Youth Department functions.

6.    Organize events and plan for an adequate number of advisors.

        7.    Organize at least one business meeting and one social per month in addition to educational and spiritual events               

8.    Host or attend annual retreats (once or twice per year).

9.    Spend time with the kids in their  daily life (part of youth ministry is to have the children trust the Youth Director in order to share the struggles of life with them). This includes making personal visits to the homes of our youth, having lunch w/them at their school, attending their  extra curricular activities, etc.

10.  To encourage parental involvement in youth activities.


CHURCH SCHOOL:


1.    To be involved in the progress and well-being of the Church School Program.

2.    To work together with the Church School Superintendent.

3.    To be familiar with the curriculum used in our C.S. Program.

4.    To assist the teachers as a “resource” if needed.

5.    To teach the High School class (because it is connected with SOYO).

6.    To help plan, organize and facilitate our Vacation Bible School.

7.    To ensure parish participation in all Archdiocesan creative festivals:

a.  Creative Arts: Writing, Art, Poetry, Photography, etc. b.  Bible Bowl

c.  To attend all scheduled Sunday School meetings and workshops.


OFFICE:


1.    The Youth Director is expected to be at the Church office on a daily basis, excluding day off and any youth related function, and should work a minimum of 40-hours/week. These hours can only be altered with the express permission of the Priest.

2.    To assist with administrative functions in any capacity necessary which includes, but is not limited to: answering phones, writing letters, greeting visitors, completing weekly bulletin, etc.

3.    To make full use of the computer network and social media for means of organization, communication and follow-up related to our youth department.

4.    To attend all parish council meetings and present a report on the status of the youth department.

5.    To assist the Priest in any appropriate capacity needed.


COMMUNICATION:


1.    To ensure that every child/teen and parent is aware of every event and function that is held.

2.    To utilize every possible means of communication to do so, which includes but is not limited to: phone, email, etc.

3.    To follow through with every communication to ensure that events are well attended.

4.    To assist in finding transportation for any child that may have this need.

5.    To help provide content for our parish newsletter.

6.    The Youth Director is directly responsible to the Priest in all capacities.


Requirements:


  1. A member in good standing of the Orthodox Church, knowledgeable about the beliefs and practices of the Church, with a deep love for Christ and a sense of calling to share His love with young people.

  2. Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

  3. Three personal and two professional references.

  4. Prior experience in youth ministry.

  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  6. Excellent organizational and administrative skills.

  7. Competence in basic lay counseling and listening skills appropriate for youth ministry.

  8. Awareness of Youth Protection Practices and all Youth Ministry guidelines, policies and procedures of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America.

  9. The passing of a drug test and a complete background check that will include a review of criminal records, the sexual offender registry and DMV records.
