Position Overview

This is a full-time, salaried position located in Tempe, AZ that reports to our Director of Ministries. The Campus Missionary will offer full-time pastoral and evangelical discipleship to the college community of Arizona State University. Ministry to Orthodox Christian students will involve the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of a rhythm of worship, witness, fellowship, philanthropy, and education on and around campus. Outreach to non-Orthodox students will involve creatively generating opportunities for those unfamiliar with the Orthodox Church to experience the OCF community, our deep theological tradition, and the liturgical life of the Church.

The Campus Missionary will achieve the above by working closely with the local parishes to integrate the campus community into the broader life of the Orthodox Church and create a bridge between the lives of the college students and the local Orthodox communities. You will have the opportunity to grow the Orthodox Church in the United States and help shape a brand new ministry in the American Church.

Responsibilities

  • Live an active prayer, liturgical, and philanthropic life in the local Orthodox communities as an example and guide for the college students being ministered to
  • Plan and execute ministry activities on and off campus that facilitate fellowship, spiritual formation, and service to others
  • Partner with local parishes and clergy to integrate on campus programming with parish life
  • Establish a rhythm of prayer on campus and work with local clergy to coordinate opportunities for college students to participate in the life of the Church
  • Establish personal relationships with Orthodox Christian college students and students interested in Orthodox Christianity
  • Proactively pursue the engagement of more college students and the greater visibility of Orthodox Christianity in the local college communities
  • Work with an Advisory Council to integrate the campus community into the broader life of the Orthodox Church
  • Equip and mentor the members of the local OCF chapter’s student leadership team both individually and as members of teams in collaboration with chapter advisors
  • Foster relationships and partnerships with stakeholders to create opportunities to engage with the student community
  • Connect local students with OCF national ministries and other opportunities for faith formation, development, and involvement in the greater Church
  • Contribute to at least one national OCF ministry (monthly chapter content, Discord Q&A forum, etc.) throughout the year
  • Maintain regular communications with current donors and participate in fundraising activities as requested by OCF’s development staff
  • Manage expenses and adhere to ministry budget

  • Proven experience in evangelical/missionary ministry
  • Experience as a member of an OCF chapter
  • Proven track record in a leadership role; self-driven and able to operate independently

  • Respectful of the diversity of Orthodox Christian cultures; strong desire to honor and cultivate Orthodox Christian traditions apart from his/her own
  • Patient, discerning, and pastorally minded, with the ability to make difficult decisions in sensitive situations
  • Respectful of the role of clergy in the life of the Church; obedient to the pastoral decisions of local community leaders
  • Understanding of the Orthodox Christian liturgical life, and patterns of prayer and engagement in the Church
  • Exceptional communicator, both written and spoken
  • Excellent time management skills who is organized and willing to be held accountable
  • Technologically savvy
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, students, board members, volunteers, donors, and other supporters
  • At least 5 years of active life in the Orthodox Church after reception

Requirements

  • Faith and Education: Due to the nature of and responsibilities for this position, an Orthodox Christian who has a foundational knowledge of the faith and experience with the various traditions within American Orthodoxy is essential. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in ministry or theology is preferred.
  • Spiritual Foundations: As an individual discipling others, a Campus Missionary must be in his/her own discipleship relationship with a spiritual father/confessor and maintain a strong prayer and liturgical lifestyle upon which to base their ministry.
  • Travel: Candidates must be willing to travel several times a year as it relates to program responsibilities.
  • Relocation: The missionary and (when applicable) his/her spouse and children must be willing to relocate to a location central to the local college campuses and Orthodox Christian parishes.
  • Marriage/Family: If the missionary is married, his/her spouse must be willing to support his/her spouse in their ministry by partnering in the missionary’s effort to serve as an example of the Christian life to those he/she serves. It is also preferred that the missionary’s family is willing to occasionally invite college students to experience their home life and personal rhythm of life as Orthodox Christians.
  • Resonate with OCF core values and mission and exhibit a strong evangelical spirit and desire to grow the Orthodox Church.
