Barista

Introduction:

Kairos Cafe is an Orthodox coffee shop and bookstore opening in Syracuse, NY at 115 Green Street. The building is a 2 story historical house that has been used for business purposes over many years. It is owned by Michelle Scully and Athena Cleghorn, two Orthodox Christians living in the Syracuse area. They are parishioners of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church in East Syracuse and have received the blessing of Metropolitan Joseph (Bulgarian Diocese) and their parish priests to pursue this endeavor. The cafe is set to open in June 2024. 

We are looking to hire two full-time and two part-time baristas who will work directly with manager Nigel van der Woude as Kairos Cafe opens. Cafe hours will be Tuesday-Saturday, 7am-4pm, with opening shifts beginning at 6am and closing shifts ending at 5pm.

Kairos Cafe aims to support the monastic community in the United States and to partner with the local pan-Orthodox community.  Our work is to be a successful, reliable business that gives back to the local and global community.

Job Duties:

  • Develop knowledge of espresso and other cafe offerings (coffee, tea, smoothies, etc.) to provide quality beverages to customers
  • Develop knowledge of and serve pastries and breakfast sandwiches, mindful of dietary restrictions/allergies
  • Follow a daily regimen of cleaning (coffee equipment, dishes, restroom, prep surfaces, seating area) and observe proper food safety procedures
  • Operate Point of Sale system and cash register for beverage, food, and bookstore offerings
  • Once trained, open and/or close cafe independently
  • Develop knowledge of and connections with local Orthodox parishes, monasteries, and businesses; be able to speak about Kairos Cafe’s sources for coffee and other products
  • Provide quality customer service and direct customers to bookstore offerings and local resources as needed (i.e. an inquirer could be provided with the contact information of a local priest)
  • Participate in prayers prior to opening for business and after closing. These will be short and will take place in the prayer room on the second floor of the building

Requirements:

  • Commitment to and excitement about Kairos Cafe’s mission as an Orthodox Christian nonprofit
  • Essential: experience in customer service and/or people-centered work environments; kind, courteous, and enthusiastic manner with customers
  • Demonstrable experience working in team environments
  • Preferred but not required: experience in the food industry
  • Preferred but not required: experience as a barista
  • Ability to responsibly handle money
  • Ability to take direction
  • Ability to problem solve using appropriate resources
  • Willingness to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and with different perspectives/opinions

Compensation:

  • Starting compensation: $17-18/hour depending on experience
  • Every Sunday off
  • Flexibility in scheduling (depending on number of baristas hired)
  • Other benefits are negotiable and vary depending on your needs and wants.
